Haudenosaunee: Portraits of the Firekeepers, the Onondaga Nation
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (June, 1999)
Average review score:

Portraits of contemporary Onondaga people of the IroquoisThis is an extraordinary collection of 78 moving and culturally sensitive photographs, with an historically illustrative accompanying text, of members of the Onondaga Nation of the People of the Longhouse, the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois). Emanating from each individual or group portrait is a feeling of dignity, beauty, courage, resolve, and hope which mirror the long history of native people's struggles to retain and pass on to their children and grandchildren their rich heritage of living on the earth with wisdom and responsibility. Developed as a project with the full cooperation of the subjects themselves, and photographed in the old Longhouse on the Onondaga Nation Territory near Syracuse, NY in 1991/92, this is a remarkable and beautiful visual and historical record of survival.

High Tide at Gettysburg
Published in Hardcover by William s Konecky Assoc (March, 1994)
Average review score:

New to Gettysburg? Which book do you read?Tucker takes the entire battle beginning to end and places it together for the novice reader. Where does the "first-timer" look for a well rounded book on the battle? He or she may find it here. Tucker does an excellent job getting the basis for the battle complete while covering issues such as Lee's Campaign, Heth's attack, Longstreet's flank march, Little Round Top, Culp's Hill, the Pickett/Pettigrew charge and of course Lee's retreat from Pennsylvania. Don't let the word novice scare you or the fact that it was written in the late fifties sway your decision. Tucker includes many details and backs them up with roughly 400 pages of information valuable to anyone looking to gain further insight on Gettysburg. Does Tucker grab everything common in books covering certain days or events in Gettysburg? No. Though for someone trying to understand and get the general format of the battle, this is the book to read.

The History of Japanese Photography
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (March, 2003)
Average review score:

Simply stunningThis is one of the finest photography books I've seen recently. Filled with page after page of gorgeous photographs spanning a range of over one hundred years, from rare vintage images to fascinating contemporary work, this volume tells the story of a vastly understudied area of artistic work. Everything about this volume--its design, its production, its content--does beautiful justice to the subject matter. Finally--a worthy book on Japanese photography!!!

I Speak English for My Mom
Published in School & Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (March, 1989)
Average review score:

This is the book for anyone who teaches immigrant children! This is so real life. As someone who has taught immigrant and refugee adults as well as their children, I can attest that I have seen time and again where the children are the translators for the family. The nice thing about the book, too, is that the ending is very proactive. The mother ends up going to an adult school and learning English. Anyone who teaches second language speakers will certainly have kids who can really relate to this book.

A Is for Astronaut
Published in Hardcover by Little Simon (01 May, 1995)
Average review score:

An excellent, colorful, interactive alphabet book.As a former teacher, I appreciated this simple, uncluttered book. Each page was dedicated to one letter, giving both the upper and lower cases. One large picture that began with the featured letter captured the majority of space, accompanied by one, two, or three smaller pictures that were covered with paper flaps for the child to uncover. The names of the objects were also written, either next to the large picture or on the cover of the flap. My daughter finds this book to be one of her favorites. Because the flaps are made of a reinforced paper and not cardboard, I suggest this book be read supervised with younger children in order to prolong the life of the flaps.
